"Lathe Operator of the Year 2010": experts together
Metal cutting professionals with experience of CNC lathes can apply to take part in the competition "Lathe Operator of the Year 2010" up to 9 July 2010. The application forms can be requested immediately from the editorial department of the trade journal "fertigung" in the Internet at "www.fertigung.de/2010/03/dreher-des-jahres". The five best entrants in the theoretical part will take part in fair competition "Everybody against everybody and everyone against the clock" during AMB, International Exhibition for Metal Working, on 30 September 2010. The main prize will be a trip to China.
Just like always, the competition is divided into two sections and starts with a theoretical part. The questions deal with the fundamentals which a modern lathe operator must now possess: knowledge of different materials and tools, knowledge of different technologies and processes, but also CNC and programming experience. "The questions are extremely challenging, and even cause problems for experts", says Wolfgang Pittrich, Chief Editor of "fertigung", which is organising the competition for the fifth time. The tasks for this year’s competition were set by the training centre of the machine manufacturer Emag in Salach. Incidentally, experience do not necessarily have anything to do with age. As Pittrich explains, the average age of the participants is between 25 and 35 years: "The entrants for our competition are more likely to be young and ambitious people."
The five best applicants in the theoretical section will compete against one another during AMB in Stuttgart where they must program and produce a specified part on Emag VL3 vertical lathes. An expert jury will assess the work. A training course at Emag before the practical part will ensure equal opportunity since all participants will become acquainted with and master the machine and its programming. However, they will also be questioned about their theoretical knowledge during this training course. Pittrich: "It is therefore pointless to cheat when filling out the theoretical part." All events are free of charge for the candidates in the finals.
The Emag Group is acting as the industrial partner and main sponsor of this year's demanding competition. Dieter Kollmar, Managing Director of Gruppen-Vertriebs- und Service GmbH of Emag: "The ‘Lathe Operator of the Year’ competition is very well-established and has now been successful for many years. In our opinion, it is the most important and most successful competition of this kind. The competition is also an ideal opportunity for our company to show the advantages of vertical pick-up lathes when machining small series. We are looking forward to an exciting competition at a very high technological level."
It is worthwhile taking part in the competition. In addition to honour and fame, the best lathe operator from German-speaking countries will win a trip to China for two persons. The winner will also visit the Emag plant in Taicang/Shanghai during this trip. The runner-up can enjoy a weekend for two in a large European city of his/her choice. The person in third place will receive a laptop while the fourth and fifth award winners will each be presented with a book or CD token to the value of €100.00.
Emag and the editorial department of "fertigung" are also planning an interesting accompanying programme on the following subject: "Use of vertical lathes in commission work" on the exhibition stand of Emag. The occupation of lathe operator is now totally high-tech, a fact which the competition wants to clearly emphasise. Operators of modern CNC lathes must have in-depth CNC knowledge, above-average manual skills and a great understanding of technology.
Around 2,000 companies together employing approximately 56,000 people manufacture turned parts in Germany - predominantly for the automobile industry, but also for many other key industries. The lathe turning industry records an annual turnover of around €5 billion. The aim of the competition and the exhibition activities is also to arouse curiosity among potential trainee lathe operators since demographic developments mean that there is increasing demand for apprentices who can look forward to an extremely interesting work area.
AMB in Stuttgart is the International Exhibition for Metal Working. Around 1,200 exhibitors present their innovations and further developments at this event. The exhibits include metal cutting and physico-chemical process machine tools, precision tools, products and machines from the areas of quality assurance, robots, workpiece and tool handling technology, computer systems and peripherals, parts, components and accessories. A wide-ranging accompanying programme will cater for every taste. AMB will be open daily from 09.00 to 18.00 between 28 September and 2 October 2010.
