Now Saint-Gobain is the only international company that can manufacture all of five categories of abrasive tools. The purpose of the Company entering China is to deliver its internationally leading technologies and grinding products to Chinese clients and to share advanced grinding solutions with them. In the period of CIMES 2010, He Qi, director-general of China Region Business Operation of Saint-Gobain accepted the interview of a CMJ journalist.

CMJ:Hello, Mr. He. Now, in your view, what should we pay close attention to in the current market of grinding materials and abrasive tools? What work have you done for promoting development of new technologies and what achievements have you obtained?
He Qi:I think, efficiency is the focus of the global market and also the tide of technical development. China has become the largest market of grinding materials and abrasive tools in the world and its growth speed is also the highest. Under the demand of efficiency, China's attention is turning from long product lifecycle to high productive efficiency. This is just the reason why we have been launching a series of products for China market.
Saint-Gobain exhibited Norton "Bluesky", Norton QUANTUM, TG grinding material wheel, N7 ceramic bonding agent, CBN large grinding wheel and other products in this CIMES. These products are used in different fields, but they have the common feature of efficient machining, which further certifies that comprehensive production efficiency has been initially highlighted in the grinding material and abrasive tool industry of China.
While various industries are making new requirements to machine tool in recent years, Saint-Gobain keeps developing new technologies in order to consolidate its leading position in the industry. At present, China is the global largest producer and seller of cars, but the retained quantity of cars per capita is still at low level, it is believed that there is a great development space in the whole car sector. Therefore, we will further provide services for car manufacture sector; we also possess high-quality products and mature solutions for manufacture and processing of engine, blade and other parts of airplane involved in the large airplane project of China; in the aspect of railway equipment manufacture, we have launched a series of high-performance grinding wheel for grinding rail so as to ensure safety and comfort of railway operation.
CMJ:Many enterprises are modifying their strategy under impact of the financial crisis, are turning from external market to internal market and will pay more attention to the domestic market. Would you please introduce your development strategy at home and abroad?
He Qi:Our strategy is to make more efforts in China market and keep a synchronous progress with the whole sector. The strong demand of machine tool market of China in the year 2010 brings dramatically increased orders to machine tool enterprises, but some enterprises are unconfident to uncertainty of market in the second half year. China market is diversified, and the whole market is seemed quite optimistic even if some industries are in relatively unstable development or becomes declined. We will invest more capital to China market.
The sales performance of Saint-Gobain still created a new record in the second half of 2009 in the financial crisis. At the end of the first half of 2010, we completed the expected sales objective of the whole 2009. The fact that Saint-Gobain stays at the global leading position is based on long-term investment to China market and permanent promise to Chinese users. Saint-Gobain owns three factories, one research & development center and grinding technology center in China, and has a plan to build up a new factory in Handan City, Hebei Province next year. We receive the 125th anniversary of the brand Norton in 2010 and hold this the century classic brand as our important resource for competition. Furthermore, we also participate in wind power, electronic and other processing fields so that more users can touch high quality and efficiency of Saint-Gobain products.
CMJ:For response to intensive market competition, do you think which aspects Chinese manufacture enterprises should strengthen?
He Qi:While the market is becoming more intensive day by day, the domestic enterprises of China will undoubtedly face more opportunities and challenges. In my strong impression, Chinese government and enterprises pay more attention to investment on manufacture sector, and hope to utilize the best equipment to improve manufacture level as quickly as possible, but the effect cannot catch up with their desire. The key point is that attention should be further placed on use of tools and training of human resources besides equipment. For example, in the aspect of tool, what tools to be selected and how to use them may cause great impact to product processing quality; again, in the aspect of human resources, if it is only highlighted in economic growth and business expansion at high speed, but it is ignored in long-term training of technical personnel, lack of professionals and technologies will finally become vital impact factors. We hope that the enterprises in the industry could deliberately consider their development foundation while emphasizing development scale and speed, so as to abide by the principle of quality, innovation and safety as possible as they can, thus production efficiency may truly and firmly go up and the whole industry may be better promoted.
